Hello from Edmonton, back from Japan.  The same season has different face on earth.  At the end of November... Edmonton has white face :) How about Japan's face around this time of year? :)

こんにちは。from エドモントン。11月下旬のエドモントンはすっかり真っ白の世界。同じ季節でも、所変われば、こんなに違うものですね。では、日本の地はこの時季どんな感じだろうか？

Cushion City?! (Izumisano) - 泉佐野はクッション?!

When you sit on a cushion, it feels you comfy.  Once in a while, we need this kind of moment during traveling … maybe before going to some major cities upon arrival from your country or after touring all before leaving airport for your country.   Izumisano is just right fit geographically.  City lies from ocean through field to mountain.  Fresh fish, Fresh Vegetable and Breath-taking Sunset comes in 1^st in my mind since I spent time some years.  Old and classic style is still alive.  Meantime it has an international face that has been growing along with Kansai airport in almost 20 years as long as I know.  I like to introduce just an entrance to this city.  Or I simply enjoy strolling as a traveller who is in and out of Izumisano once in a while.   Funny is that something that I am supposed to know will sometimes become new when you move from a place to a place.  Maybe just forgetting J  For example individual packaging are quite common in Japan.  I am supposed to know it however I feel “Oh!” every time I’m back.

This time I also feel a bit of excited to read a Japanese edition of a book that once I had read in English edition.   Actually I haven’t done it yet.  I’ll be doing soon.  By the way, wherever I am, who I am is sameJ

クッションに座ると心地よいですよね。旅路でそんなひとときがあると嬉しいものです。できるなら空港に到着して「さて大都市へ行くか」とかいう前、「あ～色々周って楽しかったなぁ。もうすぐ国に帰るときかぁ。」なんて時。旅の始まりか終わり。地理的にこれを可能にするのがここ泉佐野市なのです。海から緩やかに平野をかけ上がって山にゆったりと座っている街、泉佐野。真っ先に私が頭に浮かぶのは新鮮お野菜にお魚、そして惚れ惚れする夕日の空です。古き良き面影を今でも残しつつ、一方では国際色豊かな一面を持ち合わせた街。私の知る限りでは、関西空港の開港と共に発展してきたのでは。と思います。その間、約20年。散歩しているような気分になって戴ければ幸いです。と言っても、私も生まれた時からずっと住んでいる訳ではなく、たまに来て、また出て、そしてまた来てという視線になります。泉佐野への入り口にあたるエリアを紹介させて戴きます。おかしな話ですが、知っているはずの事やシーンが、帰ってくるたびに「あ～すごい！」と感動のネタになってしまいます。きっと移動をしていると、単に忘れてしまうからなのでしょうかJ 例えば、個別包装、日本ではまだまだよく見かける光景。これ知っているはずなのに、毎回帰ってきて、目にするたびに「お～！」となってしまいます。

今回ちょっこり体験する、読書方法。英語版で一度呼んだ本を、日本語版で読んでみよう。という訳。道中に読むところがミソ。ところで、やっぱりどこに居てもやる事変わらないなぁJ

Construction Worker here and there - 建設現場を覗いてみよう

“Ton ton ton” “Kan Kan Kan”.  This is the sounds that I often heard from construction site such as a legislature in Edmonton Alberta Canada.  Now I like to introduce one of a construction scene of working on roof in Japan.  Look at feet :)

Scheduling de Public Transportation - 計画能力 （公共交通de スケジュールの巻）

Edmonton Public Transportation System (ETS) is completely convenient?  My honest answer is 70 % convenient :)  By the way, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is where I live currently.    

• More than 100 routes are on service.  Yaay!
• All the spots are scattered around than condensed.  :S
• Some buses are on service only on very specific time.  :S

I think it’s because this is the color of Edmonton.   I don’t say bad.  Nobody wants to run bus service on the time when not so many people use.   Flow of passengers’ movement in Edmonton... It makes a sense.   That was my first impression actually until only yesterday. 

ただ今、カナダアルバータ州エドモントンに住んでます。そしてふと公共バスのシステムって本当に便利かな? と見直してみました。正直な私の答えは、70％便利かな?　

• 100以上のルートがある!　いいね!
• スポットがあちらこちらに広範囲に散在してるなぁ。う～ん。
• 特定の時間しか出てないバスが結構あるなぁ。う～ん。

これ、エドモントンの色だと思います。決して悪いわけではないです。当たり前ですが、あまり人が乗らない時間帯にバスを出してもしょうがない。納得です。他の都市に比べて、自家用車率が高いのでは。まぁ、すべてが散在してるからだと思いますが。一応エドモントンの乗客の動線を考慮した上、こうなってる事だと思います。昨日の昨日まで、そんな印象を持ってたのですが、ふと違う一面が見えたので少しお話させて戴きたいと思います。

Meantime, this incompleteness of (ETS) actually nurture the ability to plan!? 

When you want to go to the point that has direct access, it’s fast & easy to use handy planning gadgets available on digital tool. 

Now when you want to go to the point that doesn’t have direct access by transportation, what would you do?  If you say, “Oh, I just drive a car”, then just let this go.   Most likely people nowadays rely on digital gadgets.  They might tell you a proper route, while a puzzled one too.      

実は、この30%不便だなぁ。と思うエドモントンのバスシステム。計画を立てるという能力を養うのでは?!　

直でアクセスのある地点に行く時は、どうしますか?　最近はお手軽なトラベルプランナーや、デジタルでガジェットで、簡単、すばやく、どのルートをとればよいのか教えてくれます。

 では、全く公共のアクセスの無いところに行く時はどうしますか?　あ～私、車運転するので、と言うかたは、聞き流してください。最近はやっぱり主流のデジタルのガジェットに頼った場合、うまくいく場合と、へんてこなルートが紹介される事があります。

This is normally what I do whenever I go to a place that I’ve never been to and especially that seems to have no access by public transportation.

1. That is a “Map” that shows the whole picture of city transit.

How?  That’s when your ability to plan would be cultivated.   If you are lucky, you can find right away.  If not, still you use your full brain :) Or otherwise, intuition sometimes works when you just look & look.           

• More than 100 routes… too much :S  Which one should I pick?
• All the spots are scattered around than condensed. :S  Which one is the efficient way?
• Some buses are on service only on very specific time. :S  How can I connect with this one & that one?

Also bonus by using Map. Since it is Map, it tells you what is on the way.  If there is a shopping mall on the way, you can add extra unexpectedly besides original destination as long as time allows.  Compared to it, the digital gadgets tells you only a points & a number. 

1. One more thing.  That is a “Time Table” of each transit route.  If it’s in a book format bundled together like Thomas Cook Train Table.  Is this available now still?

It’s preferable when you have those at hand in a paper format.  (If not, still digital tools is good.)  You can compare or pick or collect the data or mark easily on a plane at one time.   When you find a perfect route, you just draw up on a paper as you like so that you can understand with diagram or letters or number or picture or whatever.  As long as you can read, that’s gonna work. 

初めて行く場所や、公共のアクセスが全くないように見える所へ行く時、いつもしている私の習慣があります。ある物を真っ先に手にします。

1. それは、公共のルートの全体像が見える「地図」です。

どうやって?　それが、計画を立てる能力を開拓できるきっかけになります。運がよければ、すぐにルートが見つかるかもしれません。そうではなくても、すべての脳を使う事は間違いなしです。さもなければ、じっと見てまたちょっと見てみて、直感でふさわしいルートが浮き上がってくるかもしれません。

• 100以上のルートがある!　ありすぎで困るなぁ。どれがいいだろう、う～ん。
• スポットがあちらこちらに広範囲に散在してるなぁ。う～ん。どれが一番効率がいいかなぁ。
• 特定の時間しか出てないバスが結構あるなぁ。う～ん。どれとどれを組み合わせよう。

更に、「地図」を使う特典があります。地図は当たり前ですが、何がどこにあるかを示した物。よって地図を見れば、道中に何があるのかも、ついでにわかります。あっ、ショッピングモールがある!　とわかれば、時間の許す限り、最終目的地とは別に組み込むこともできます。

1. 「地図」に続いて、2個目の私が真っ先に手にする物は、各ルートの「時刻表」です。1冊になっておれば、更によいのですが。トーマスクックの列車本みたいに。今もあるのかな? 

デジタルツールでも手に入りますが、できるなら計画する時は、紙のバージョンが手元にあると便利です。一つの平面で、データの比較、採集、選択、目印する事が簡単にできます。おっ、というルートが見つかれば、それを自分なりに、記号、絵、文字、数字を使って紙にまとめあげればいいだけです。とりあえず、あなたが見て、わかればよいのです。

The good part is when you find a perfect route, “Oh, there it is! ”  It’s like a feeling of coming up with an answer to the puzzle or finding out a breakthrough.  Also when you actually travel with the schedule that you made and made it all the way, it would give you a feeling of “Mission Completed!” 

Actually it turned out be that the bit of inconvenience of Edmonton Transit System became perfect to study scheduling for me when I traveled to FedEx office to pick up excited package for me.  Merci.  For this reason, I like to live not only in digital but also manual way.  Odd way:)

ワクワクする所は、「おっ、見つけた、この路線いけるぞ!」となった場合、なんだかパズルの謎が解けたか、ぴか～んと一筋の光が見えたような気分になれます。更に、いざ自分の作ったスケジュールに沿って、出陣。すべてを完了した後、「よっしゃ、完了」といった気分になれます。

この一見、少し不便だなぁ。。。と思わせたエドモントンの公共交通システム。フタを開けたら、スケジュールや計画を立てるというお勉強になったような気がします。そんなこんなとしながら、FedExさんに、わくわくパッケージを取りに行ってよかったと思ってます。Merci :) だから、デジタルだけではなく、マニュアルの世界もやめられません。ちょっと変な方法の巻きでした。

 

 

 

 

 

 

Fall Color - 秋の色

Color feels me fall-like while thinking of winter coming soon.  What color is fall for you?  Probably it depends on where you live and how you live.  I like to talk about color of fall this time.  Or I would rather simply talk as it is.

「秋も終わるかなぁ。」と思いつつ、「色だけは、秋色だなぁ。」なんてここエドモンンで思います。ところで秋色って皆さんにとってどんな色ですか?　きっと地理的な事情、もしくは個人的な事情よって色々個人差がでてくるのではないでしょうか。本日、私がふと思った秋色について少し触れさせて戴きたいと思います。といっても、いつものごとく単純、ふざけたよもやま話の連続なのですが。

“Ahh I took this scene before.  The sign board looks glowing with sunlight.” As a memory, I just liked to take a picture it again.  Then …

「そういえば、あの看板撮ったなぁ。いつか。今日はなにやら、太陽のスポットライトがあたって金色になってるぞ。」という訳で、少し近づいて記念に撮ってみることにしました。すると。。。

“Pikaaaan!” “Sun is right there:)”  I was quite happy about that.  It actually reflected to something on the building as you know.

「ぴかーん!」「わぁ!こんなところにお陽さんがある:)」ついつい喜んでしまいました。これは、単に何かに反射してるだけなのですが。

At the kitchen, some words popped up one by one in my mind.  “Maple syrup = Amber = Fall color?!”

台所で洗い物している時に、なぜかメープルシロップが頭に浮かんで、ふと色んな事がいつものごとくポコポコ飛び出てきました。「秋色って、やっぱり琥珀色だなぁ。」と。ついでに、「メープルシロップも琥珀色だな。」と。

Now I will just detour while talking.

Detour 1 - Sub title : “How does Maple Syrup work?”

 Maple syrup is a multi - player in the kitchen.  The point is that it can play a role of sugar.  Which means…it works in almost all field of breakfast, lunch, appetite and dinner.  Even global. Example is salad, pancake, drink, dressing, some dinner dishes, bakery, even Nimono (Japanese cooking), French, Italian and more. Okara is a Japanese multi player, while maple syrup is a Canadian multi player:) I love maple syrup too.  Sometimes I’m too lazy to use spoon to scoop sugar and so I just pour some maple syrup from bottle as I like.  Oops that’s part of who I am.  My words slipped. Too late:)

ここで、少し余談に入ります。

「メープルシロップのお仕事ぶり?!」の巻き:)

カナダ名物、お土産さんでよく目にする、メープルシロップ。実は、クッキングにおいてマルチプレーヤー。サラダに、ドレッシングに、ドリンクに、パンケーキの朝食に、更には和食煮物などの夕食に、お菓子作り（その他ほぼ何でも）の一員になれます。要は、砂糖代わりに使えるという事です。と言うわけで、多国籍な料理にも使えますね。パウダーではなく、液体。おからが日本のプレーヤー:) ならメープルシロップはカナダのプレーヤー:) になります。私もメープルシロップ愛用者の1人。たまに、スプーンで砂糖をすくうのが面倒だなぁ。って思う時も使います。シロップなら適当に頃合みて、ボトルから注ぐだけなので。あっ、すいません、実はめんどくさがりで大雑把な所があります:) 言ってしまった。

 

Detour 2 - Sub title : “Where does Maple Syrup live?”

Have you noticed 2 type of bottle?  Yes.  1L bottle one is often in a formation at the shelf of grocery stores in Western Canada.  Mini bottle one would often smile for you in souvenir stores in Vancouver. What about can?    This one travels sometimes from home land which is Quebec or Montreal to a farmer’s market in Western Canada. 

続けて余談。

「メープルシロップの居住地?!」の巻き:)

この写真を見ると、ボトルと缶詰。ボトルはよくカナダの西部でよく歩き回ってます。特にこの大きい1Lボトルはスーパーで整列しております。ニミニボトルは特にバンクーバーの土産屋さんでお客さんに笑いかけてます。そして缶詰はおそらく東のケベック、モントリオール（メープルシロップの本場）でスタンバイしいるのではないでしょうか?　たまに、ここエドモントンのファーマーズマーケットでもお目にかかった事がありますが、そんなに、あちらこちらでお会いできるものではないような気がします。

Detour 3 - Sub title : “The silhouette of Maple Syrup looks like a bomb?!”

It turned out to be that this real story is funny.  What happened was…

My friend flew from USA to Japan.   Her suits case was full of 1L of maple syrup bottles since she just wanted to bring those as souvenir.  In front of the turn table at the destination, she was upset by her suites case because it was like a monster looking with half opened and with duct tapes wrapped.  All the belongings inside were safe.  She was mad and of course airline sent her a new suit case later day.  But why this happened?

She actually didn’t know the rule of locking suits case in air route through USA.  Yes… rule is don’t lock or if you like to do it, then use a designated format lock.   Agents at airport most likely thought “Super heavy for this medium size of suits case?! It’s odd.” Then X ray came through … “Oh, warning!  This’s got bunch of bombs inside!?” “Open it up! Open it up!” Yes.  The silhouette just looks like a bomb :) Especially the parts of handle…

続けて余談になります。

「メープルシロップは、シルエットが爆弾に似ている?!」の巻き:)

今となっては、笑い話しですが。これ、私の友人の実話。アメリカから日本への旅路。彼女は、お土産に山ほどのメープルシロップ1Lボトルを中型スーツケースに詰め込みました。さて、日本に着いたら、スーツケースは半開き、テープでぐるぐる巻きの得体のしれない状態で出てきました。中身は全く問題なし。彼女は怒ってました当初。もちろん航空会社にクレームして代用品が送られてきましたが。何ででしょう?　

実は、彼女は知りませんでした。アメリカ線は、スーツケースに鍵をかけないor　かけるならば専用のロックを使用する事を。よって、普通に鍵をかけて出発してしまったのです。おそらく「大きさの割りに重過ぎ?!」、そしてＸ線を通すと、「えっ、爆弾がいっぱい入ってるのでは?!」と思ったのではないでしょうか。確かにメープルシロップの1Lボトルは、シルエットが爆弾に似てるかも:) 特にハンドルの部分が。だから航空会社が慌ててこじ開けたのでは。と思います。

Detour 4 - Sub title : “How do you study history of art?”

Have you noticed anything else than Maple Syrup?  Yes.  History of Art is sitting as an extra.  I had mentioned this the other days.  I like to let it sit with them, simply because its color matches with them.  Do you like study?  Naaa…. I don’t really either:)  I always just open it up at random, then enjoy the pages that hits on me.  Just like “What art will come across me today?”  Recently I like to bookmark on what hit on me.  Today is…

「お勉強どうやってしますか?」の巻き:)

写真の中に、メープルシロップ意外に何か見当たりませんか?　そうです。さりげなくエキストラでしのばせた本。これ先日、話題に挙げさせて戴いたアート品の歴史本。単純に、色がちょうどマッチするから。勉強が好きな方って正直言ってそんなにいらっしゃらないかと思います。私もその1人:)いつも、この本を気まぐれで開けて出たページを眺めてます。これ、結構楽しいです。「今日は、どんなページに出くわすかな?」ってな感じです。最近は、そこにブックマークをしてみたりしてます。今日は、こちら。

“Three Musician” & “Lobster Trap and Fish Tail”   A bit funny:) “Lobster? And fish?”  Lobster is typical in Ise area which I was just talking about yesterday.  I myself like it very much.  Ah that makes me a little hungry.  Yes.  My recommendation:  When you visit Ise area, try some Ise Lobster:)  “ Three Musician” sounds good too:)

「Three Musician」「Lobster Trap and Fish Tail」ロブスターに魚?　なんだか、ちょっとうけてしまいました:)　昨日、伊勢のスライドショー作った後だけに。実は、「伊勢えび」は本場が伊勢なんですよね。伊勢への出張や旅行に出くわしたら、ぜひ本場の伊勢えびを試してみましょう。私も大好物:) あ～エビフライも食べたいなぁ。なんて思いました。音楽家!?もいい響きですね:)

After all I talked about sub titles, how can I end today’s subject?  Can I say “My color on October 15:)”?

ところで、本題の締めは何にしようかなぁ。とりあえず、10月15日の私の色にしようかな:)
