わからない単語に出くわした時どうしますか? たいていは、便利なかしこいデジタルツールがあっという間に、教えてくれますね。時々原始的な行動をとる私は、本当に「すごいし、便利だなぁ。」と実際に感心しながら、恩恵こうむってます。そして今でも、従来の本の辞書を使用されてる方もいらっしゃるかと思います。実は、私もその1人です。
Now I’m going to talk about a bit funny & primitive case
of searching word in which I first use an English English dictionary to know a
Japanese word.
今日は、「知らない日本単語を知る為に、英英辞書をまずは使う」という、変な経験談を話させて戴きます。
When I just worked on my photo albums with Japanese comment,
I bump into a moment of “Oh what is that part of flower called?” I wanted to call the part “Gakuhen”(in
Japanese) which is sepal. However I totally forgot how it’s called in
Japanese. So I found myself going like
this…
実は、写真アルバムの日本語のコメントを書いている途中に、ふと出くわしました。「お花のこの部分、何て言うんだっけ?」小さい頭を少しひねってみましたが、やっぱり何も思い当たらない。年だなぁ。ちなみに、知りたかった単語は「がく片」。気がついたらこんな行動をとってました。
“Ohhh what is that part called?...
“Ok, that dictionary might have a description of flower with pictures.”
“Let’s go look for a word flower.”
Then I reached almost in there like this.
「何て言うんだったっけ?」
「あ～、もしかしてあの辞書なら絵つき、図解で、お花の絵が載ってるかも。」
「早速、flowerを探してみようっと。」
「あ～sepalって言うんや。」
After I knew “Oh it’s called sepal. Now let’s go look for a word sepal in English Japanese Dictionary.”
It says Sepal
means “Gakuhen”. That’s how I reached
there. It didn’t take so long actually.
Sometimes it is good idea to have paper dictionary as a tip
of use even if digital world is a main stream.
You use fingers to move. You use
a guess mind to “Oh where about on this dictionary” or this kind of funny case.
この後は、楽々。英和辞書でsepalを調べるだけ。という訳で無事「がく片」にたどり着きました。そんなに時間はかかりません。
どんなにデジタルになった世の中でも、やはり従来の本の辞書を持っているとやっぱり便利。指を動かすのは非常にいい事。そしてどの辺りかなぁ。と感覚を推量するのもいい事。そして今回みたいなちょっと変な調べ方も趣き深し。この英英辞書は、私個人的に重宝してます。絵つき図解がたくさん載ってます。もう今は、この辞書見ないのかな。カナダにも日本にも居たこの辞書、私の移動と共に、気がついたら一緒に長年ついてきてました。
